Gutter guards

Prevent blockages, not just clear them.

Properties that call us most frequently share one factor: mature trees nearby. Oak, lime, beech and conifer shed leaves and seeds that accumulate faster than most homeowners expect. Gutter guards do not eliminate maintenance entirely, but significantly reduce blockage frequency and prevent the severe debris ingress that causes overflow damage.

Important: Guards should always be fitted to a clean, clear gutter. Fitting over existing debris traps it permanently. We always clean before fitting.

Three types compared honestly

TypeBest forLimitations
Stainless meshMost properties, especially near broadleaf trees. Most effective all-round solution.Very fine seeds may occasionally pass through standard mesh — micro-mesh specification addresses this
Brush insertsLight leaf fall, simple installationFine debris lodges in bristles over time. Requires annual removal and rinse.
Foam insertsLow upfront costMoss grows through foam within 2–3 seasons in Hampshire's climate. Not recommended.

We do not install foam inserts. In our experience of local conditions they become a moss-filled sponge within two to three seasons.

Tree-specific advice

Oak and beech (Fleet GU51, Farnham GU9)

Heavy leaf fall in October–December. Standard stainless mesh handles this well. Properties with close mature oak or beech typically still benefit from one clearance per year even with guards fitted.

Pine and conifer (Camberley GU15, Sandhurst GU47)

Fine pine needles pass through standard mesh and compact in downpipes causing complete blockages. Micro-mesh (under 2mm aperture) is the appropriate specification here. We assess this during the quote.

Lime and horse chestnut (Aldershot GU11)

Large leaves and conker casings generally sit on top of standard mesh without entering the gutter. Lower risk — standard mesh is appropriate.

Do guards eliminate cleaning?

They significantly reduce it. Most properties with guards move from annual to every two to three years. A brief visual check after severe leaf fall remains worthwhile — moss can grow on top of mesh in damp conditions and fine silt builds up near downpipe inlets over time.

FAQ

Common questions.

For most properties across Farnborough, Fleet and Aldershot, stainless steel mesh guards perform best. Foam inserts in particular harbour moss growth within two to three seasons in Hampshire's climate and are not something we install.
Yes, always. Fitting guards over existing debris traps it permanently and blocks water flow. The clean is a prerequisite of every guard installation.
Standard mesh can struggle with very fine pine needles, particularly in Camberley GU15 and Sandhurst GU47. We specify micro-mesh for these properties and assess during the quote visit.
Much less frequently — typically every two to three years rather than annually. A brief visual check after severe autumn leaf fall remains worthwhile.
Yes, using appropriate clips. Cast iron guttering is common in Aldershot GU11 and Farnham GU9. We do not drill into original ironwork.
